Chapter 767 Florida Statutes authorizes local animal control authorities to investigate reported incidents involving any dog that may be dangerous. If authorities initially decide that a dog should be classified as dangerous, the dog’s owner can ask for a hearing prior to a final determination.

If Fido loses at the hearing, and/or a dangerous dog classification is upheld by the county court on appeal, Fido’s owner must obtain a certificate of registration from the animal control authority serving the area in which he or she resides, and the certificate must be renewed annually. Read all about Chapter 767 here.

Medical Mistakes, Malpractice and More

Florida law requires insurance companies, self-insurance funds and joint underwriting associations to report when they pay to satisfy a judgment or reach a settlement involving alleged error, omission or negligence by insured doctors, dentists, hospitals, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), abortion clinics, ambulatory surgical centers and crisis stabilization units.

GoToTell gathered a pile of reports dating back to January 1, 2005 through June 1, 2007. We organized them by county for Tampa Bay. As you read, remember that just because an insurance company paid doesn’t automatically mean the doctor or hospital screwed up (although in some cases they sure as hell did). Sometimes insurance companies pay because it’s cheaper than a fight. Docs don’t call those shots. Insurers do.

Are these records complete? Probably not. Some doctors and institutions won’t appear, for example, because they don’t carry professional liability insurance, or are self-insured, which means they’re exempt from the reporting law. If you want to check statewide records going back more years, look here.

Click the name of the county you want to search. Names are listed alphabetically. The links next to each name open state summary files, which list case details and names of individuals (no patients, of course) involved. Hernando Hillsborough Hernando Hillsborough
